Anyone recall my Trigger the Bloodshed review of a while ago? The long and short of it was that brutality alone couldn’t save that disc. And now here I am, and here is Total Fucking Darkness as the literal translation would be. Or so I heard. I don’t come from the frostbitten north.
First and foremost, the bandname is not appropriate to the music. It’s way too tame. That’s right, Total Fucking Darkness is too tame to describe the music. What Trigger the Bloodshed set out (and failed) to do, TJM succeed in, in every fucking way. This shit gets you so fucking pumped and violent you can smash through the rooftops of cars, throw trucks at old people, smack a shotgun into a kid’s mouth and use their teeth for shrapnel. If you’re watching this shit live, I bet people’s heads are getting knocked off clean in the moshpit. It’s that fucking pissed.
This is my first run-in with TJM but I already know this will be a favorite in my playlist when I feel really fucken angry. Musically, it’s roughly a mix of death metal and the more violent elements of hardcore, but hardcore never sounded so good if you ask me. The key to the supreme brutality on display here is the fact that not all melody is abandoned. When you’re causing total fucking destruction, you don’t just keep pounding into the same old guy, you mingle it with smashing in the faces of school kids with bricks, headbutting the disabled and stabbing priests until they look like a meatgrinder fell on top of them. A good mixture of faster and slower stuff makes sure the momentum is preserved. The short length of the songs helps too; make this shit too long and you can’t keep it up.
Only near the end of the album does TJM take the time to reflect on the chaos, blood and murder they’ve just unleashed. There’s some Swedish talking accompanied by some weird, creepy noise background. Then, after they’re done looking at the results of their bloody killing spree, they decide to cause some more to round off the album. So a couple more churches get destroyed by Molotov cocktails made out of babies. Fucking awesome.
So to conclude, TJM are fucking awesome and more pissed than most bands claiming to be pissed. Release your fucking rage, Luke, and join the Total Fucking Dark side.
